Today, it is more and more common for people to not know how to meet new friends. This adult camp encourages the introduction and formation of friendships between strangers. One of the primary ways it does this is by encouraging campers to design and construct their own cabin. There are also multiple campfire moments where people can relax, gather and get to know each other.
The cube was derived from the existing 16’ grid within Rhinegeist Brewery. The cubes bring the space to a more comfortable, human scale as well as being easily built, customizable, and transferable to another site.
Our first semester of Capstone was primarily a research semester to gain knowledge and insights into our topic of choosing. I chose to look at the rapid decrease in strong friendships and why making friends seems harder than ever in an age where due to social media, we are more connected than ever. I also wanted to look into forming friendships for young professionals, as research shows that there is a sharp decline in the amount of new friendships formed post-graduation. With this in mind, the question that I wanted my Capstone to answer was... How might we create a socially engaging space that capitalizes on connecting strangers and forming friendships?
During the second semester of Capstone, the design was developed and finalized.
Today, it is more and more common for people to not feel comfortable meeting new people. Social media and technology has helped to perpetuate this problem with young adults no longer knowing how to communicate without it. My generation was on the cusp of this, and we have already seen the loss in valuable relationships and face to face communication due to it. What does this mean for the future?
This project developed from my own experience of trying to meet new people as an emerging adult. Over my experiences studying abroad, traveling and on co-op, I have realised how hard it is to make new friends in a new city. This project will give people the opportunity to meet new people and form friendships.
Think back to your fondest memories as a child, to when you were making the most friends & having the most fun. When I do I think of summer camp. Camp is shown to give people good healthy, an ability to get along with others thinking and problem solving skills, self-esteem, life skills, self-reliance, pro-social behaviours and a good self-concept.
Camp lets you spend the day being physically active, carefree, relaxed, and silly. It builds self-confidence and self-esteem while giving campers activities and diverse opportunities to succeed at. It allows one to try new (and thereby maybe a little frightening) things while being unpluged from technology and rediscovering their creative powers. It strengthens your social skills where you can make true friends and have fun.

I would love for the camp to offer 3 to 7 day overnight camps that will vary in themes to bring in a larger and more varied crowd.
